Managing Short Term Guest's Itinerary
Day1 : Arrival night, Dine in Xintiandi-Crystal Jade Restaurant and then have a drink afterwards at the Cloud Nine if staying at Hyatt. Or just hang out at Xintiandi and visit several night clubs there. It is a great place to have lunch too and shop (trifle expensive but good stuff). Sigh over stuff in Shanghai Tang and Anthony Chao-very pricey, very quality stuff.
Day 2 : Sight seeing : Give one single day. Go to Longhua Temple (amazing), Jade Buddha Temple (exquisite statue), Shanghai Museum (check out the Museum shop for some of the best reproduction of antiques) and take a cruise on the river around 7 pm to see the lights on both sides of the Bund. Alternatively dine in M on the Bund to see across to the new Shanghai called Pudong (East of the River )from the old Shanghai called Puxi (West of the River.)
Day 3 : Go to Xian yang (Pronounced Shanyang) market. Shop for fabulous fakes at extremely cheap price. Bargain extremely hard. Quote wildly low and see how it goes from there.
Day 4 : Start with shopping in Yu Yuan Garden in Nanshi-old china town. Bargain hard. You will need the full morning there. It is bordered by streets lined with tons of handicrafts-again bargain hard. Then head to Dongjiadu fabric market. Bargain. Silks, chiffons, liner all are around RMB 15 to 25 a meter. Bargain again. Tailors are willing to deliver in a day or two to visitors short on time.
Day 5 : Go to Nanjing Lu, pedestrian street. Go to Silk King for expensive silks. Right next door is Pearl City- first and second floor. Ignore ground. Bargain again. Walk around and look at the buildings there. Most of the buildings are very old. If you have time still go to Dong Tai Lu to look at so handicrafts-some real mostly copies.
If you stay at Down Town Marriot, it is walking distance from Nanjing pedestrian street. For reference have in mind that One Yuan equals about 5.4 Indian Rupee. If you have time still go and see the biggest mall of Shanghai-Grand Gateway Mall
If staying longer, take a peep into shops like Artique and Jooi on Taicang Lu. Wuzhong Lu has a long line of shops dealing in furniture and handicrafts. Zhong Zhong, Hu and HU are worth a look see. Further down into Puxi come towards Hongqiao Pearl City, the new address for picking up pearls.
